Gerald Tucker Sr.’s Journey in Boxing
Gerald Tucker Sr. began his boxing career in 1994 at the age of 15. After being sidelined from Little League baseball due to poor grades, his mother encouraged him to focus on his studies. However, while she worked, Gerald secretly began training with Ricardo Williams Jr., quickly showcasing his natural talent. Within just four months, he climbed to the #3 rank in the USA. Following a controversial loss, Gerald achieved the #2 ranking, proving his determination and skill. That same year, he became the National Junior Golden Gloves Champion and won the National Invitational at the Ohio State Fair.
1994–1999: Rising Star
Gerald continued to make waves in the boxing world:
- 1995: National Golden Gloves Runner-Up and Ohio State Fair Champion.
- 1996: A banner year, winning multiple championships:
- National Golden Gloves Champion (Light Flyweight).
- Eastern Olympic Trial Champion (Light Flyweight).
- National Champion at the St. Louis Expo.
- Earned a spot as an Olympic Alternate after a close loss in the Olympic Trials finals.
- Represented the U.S. in international competitions, including USA vs. Germany and USA vs. Russia.
- Champion at the U.S. National Under-19 Championships (Flyweight).
- 1997: Earned a bronze medal at the King’s Cup in Thailand, defeating two of the world’s top-ranked fighters. He also won:
- National Invitational Ohio State Fair.
- National Champion at the Indianapolis Expo.
- National PAL Tournament (Most Outstanding Boxer Award).
- 1998: Became the National Golden Gloves Champion and National PAL Tournament Champion in the Flyweight Division.
- 1999: Gerald’s remarkable achievements culminated in a gold medal at the Pan American Games, where he was the only American to win gold. He also became the National PAL Tournament Champion (Bantamweight) and National Golden Gloves Runner-Up.
2000: Turning Professional
In 2000, Gerald competed in the Olympic Trials but fell short in the finals. He turned professional that same year, signing a co-management deal with Floyd Mayweather and J. Prince. Gerald moved to Las Vegas, living with Mayweather while building a professional record of 5-0 with three knockouts.
During his fifth professional fight, Gerald received the heartbreaking news of his brother’s passing. Despite the devastating loss, he fought and delivered a first-round KO but chose to retire shortly afterward, stepping away from the ring for six years.
2007–Present: Coaching and Mentorship
In 2007, Gerald returned to Las Vegas, determined to reclaim his place in the boxing world while balancing family life. By 2013, he transitioned into coaching, mentoring fighters like Dante Strayhorn, Cerresso Fort (signed to 50 Cent), Raynell Williams, and Jamel Herring.
At age 37, with encouragement from Adrien Broner and under the guidance of Coach Michael Stafford, Gerald briefly returned to the ring but retired due to a wrist injury.
Today, Gerald is a highly respected boxing trainer, working with some of the sport’s biggest names, including Adrien Broner, Floyd Mayweather, Claressa Shields, and Tyron Woodley. He continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of boxers through initiatives like:
